How it works
Each policy has a definitions section that says exactly who counts as an insured. Under a typical auto policy, that can include:
- the named insured, the person or people shown on the declarations page,
- family members listed on the policy, including when they drive someone else's car with permission,
- other people driving your car with your permission, for liability coverage,
- relatives who live in your household, under some coverages and state rules.
Who counts can differ from one part of the policy to another, for example between liability coverage and coverage for damage to your own car, so check the definitions in each part of your policy.
Insurers ask you to list the drivers in your household when you apply. Leaving a regular driver off the policy can cause problems if that person has a claim, so ask your insurer or agent who must be listed.
