## Quick answer

To drive legally in Las Vegas you need Nevada's minimum liability insurance: $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident and $20,000 for property damage. Insurers must offer uninsured motorist and medical payments coverage, but both are optional. Statewide, Nevada drivers spent $1,461.54 per insured vehicle in 2023, above the national $1,281, even though Nevada's share of uninsured drivers is below the national rate.

## What Nevada requires on a Las Vegas policy

Nevada is an at-fault state. If you cause a crash, your liability insurance pays the other people's injury and property claims, up to your limits. Minimums rose to 25/50/20 on July 1, 2018. Keep in mind that a property damage limit of $20,000 can fall short if you damage a newer car or more than one vehicle.

Insurers must also offer two coverages that you are free to decline:

| Coverage | What Nevada requires | What it pays for |
|---|---|---|
| Uninsured and underinsured motorist | Must be offered together with UM at your bodily injury limits; optional | Your injuries when the at-fault driver has no or too little insurance |
| Medical payments | Must be offered (at least $1,000); optional | Medical bills for you and your passengers, regardless of fault |
| Personal injury protection | Not required | Not part of Nevada policies |

Even with 11.1% of Nevada drivers estimated to be uninsured in 2023, a lower share than nationally, uninsured drivers are still on the road. ## Driving in Las Vegas

Las Vegas had 679,817 residents in 2025, according to the Census Bureau. Commuters spend an average of 25.7 minutes getting to work, and only 8.9% of households have no vehicle, close to the national share of 8.4%. In other words, most Las Vegas households depend on a car.

Nevada's roads carry more risk per mile than the national average. The state recorded 417 crash deaths in 2024, or 12.8 per 100,000 people, and 1.47 per 100 million miles, according to IIHS. Speeding played a part in 33% of deaths, and only 25% happened on rural roads, so most occurred on urban roads. Those crash costs flow into liability and collision prices.

If you drive for a rideshare or delivery app, your personal policy may not work the way you expect while the app is on. Our [rideshare driver guide](https://statecover-guide.com/drivers/rideshare/) explains the gaps to check.

## What moves your Las Vegas premium

Insurers price by the territory where the car is garaged, using the claims history of that area. The NAIC notes that urban areas see more claims than rural ones and that repair costs are higher in more populated places. Our guide on [how ZIP codes affect car insurance](https://statecover-guide.com/costs/zip-code/) explains territories in detail.

Two other points are specific to Nevada and to Las Vegas data:

- **Credit.** The NAIC lists these states as banning credit-based insurance scores for rating or for offering or renewing a policy: California, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon and Utah. Ask insurers how they use credit information in Nevada; our [credit score guide](https://statecover-guide.com/costs/credit-score/) explains the background.
- **Theft.** NICB's latest release lists only the states and metro areas with the most thefts, and neither Nevada nor the Las Vegas area appears on those lists. Nationally, thefts fell 23.2% to 659,880. A stolen car is covered only by [comprehensive coverage](https://statecover-guide.com/coverage/comprehensive/).

## Ways to pay less in Las Vegas

1. **Compare quotes for identical coverage.** Use the same limits and deductibles with each insurer; see [shopping at renewal](https://statecover-guide.com/saving/shopping-at-renewal/).
2. **Keep a clean record.** Tickets and at-fault crashes count against you at renewal; see [driving record](https://statecover-guide.com/costs/driving-record/).
3. **Choose deductibles on purpose.** A higher [deductible](https://statecover-guide.com/saving/deductible/) lowers collision and comprehensive premiums but raises what you pay after a claim.
4. **Ask about discounts and telematics.** See our [discounts guide](https://statecover-guide.com/saving/discounts/).
5. **Get help if needed.** The Nevada Division of Insurance answers consumer questions at 888-872-3234 (toll-free); 775-687-0700 (Carson City); 702-486-4009 (Las Vegas).
