## Quick answer

A binder is a short-term agreement that gives you temporary insurance coverage until the insurer can issue or deliver the actual policy. It lets coverage begin before all the paperwork is finished.

## How it works

An agent or insurer may give you a binder when coverage needs to start right away, such as the day you pick up a newly bought car, while the full policy is still being prepared. The binder is temporary: it is replaced by the policy once it is issued, or it ends at the time stated on it.

A few practical points:

- **Get it in writing.** Ask for a copy of the binder or a temporary ID card and keep it until the policy and permanent ID cards arrive.
- **Check the details.** Make sure the binder names the right people and vehicles and shows the coverages and limits you asked for.
- **Compare when the policy arrives.** The declarations page should match what you were promised. Raise any difference with your agent or insurer straight away.
- **Proof of insurance.** Whether a binder counts as proof for vehicle registration or a traffic stop depends on your state, so ask your agent or DMV.
